AUCTION 301 - ASIAN ART from two important Italian collections (Traditional)
Lot 64
Korean Thangka painted in tempera on canvas depicting Buddha Tejaprabha seated on a throne between Suyabrabha, the bodhisattva of the sun and Chandraprabha, bodhisattva of the moon and surrounded by a multitude of the heavenly deities and various anthropomorphic personifications. The iconography shows an interesting syncretism between Buddhism and Taoism, characteristic of the Seven Star composition popular in the 19th century.
Exceptional for its quality and dimensions, this painting was probably made for a main temple to be placed behind the large central figure.
