Lot 244
A large embossed metal round tray with wide brim and central petal-shaped umbo. Densely engraved with infinite knots, intertwined sprays and an empty shield, designed to be filled with the coat of arm of the family of the owner, in the central circle. Similar artifacts were produced in the late Mamluk period in Syria or Egypt and subsequently decorated in Venice, which claimed intense trades with the Levant. A domestic Italian production, inspired by Islamic shapes and decorations, developed in the same period and lasted for at least two centuries.
