ASTA 193 - FINE CHINESE, ASIAN & ISLAMIC WORKS OF ART
Lot 72
This huge dish was made in Vietnam, or maybe in China to be exported in South-East Asia. The painting at the centre of the plate portrays a Qilin, or maybe a fantastic horned creature. The well is embellished with intertwined flowers and the rim shows a series of rhomboid motifs. The floral motif is repeated near the underside, inside two Greek frets. This object is very similar to a Chinese dish kept in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (EAX 1707), dating back to the second half of 14th century.
