Auction 355 | ISLAMIC & ORIENTAL ART Traditional
Lot 160
An exceptional natural sandstone or stucco fragment originally belonging to the architectural decoration of a sacred building. The soft wavy line of the upper part and the high quality of the complex rosette decoration suggest that it may be an acroter placed within a niche on the walls of a building included in an important temple complex. Fragments stylistically similar to this are still visible at the remains of the Preah Ko, the temple of the "Sacred bull", in the disappeared city of Hariharalaya, near Angkor in Cambodia. The temple, built around 879, is one of the most evocative archaeological sites in Asia and it is famous for its exceptional relief decorations populated with mythological creatures hidden among baroque interweaving flowers.
