FINE CHINESE, ISLAMIC & ASIAN ART
Lot 473
Rare and peculiar painting on canvas, depicting the dance of Krishna with the gopi (cowhands devotees), and with the female figures all having the face, the semblance and the jewels of Queen Victoria (reigning 1837-1901). Such peculiarity helps in dating the painting as subsequent to the visit of the queen to India, and the following invite to the court in London extended to the king of Nepal, which took place in 1850. The tradition states that the Rasa dance happens on a night, during which Krishna gathers the gopi by means of the sound of his flute, and dances with them, stretching the length of the night to 4.32 billions of years, the length of a cycle of the Hindu universe. The work was exhibited at the Anthropological and Ethnographic museum, University of Turin, during the exhibit “Tibet, centro del cielo, cuore del mondo”, February 8 – March 25, 2005.
