A snake shaped netsuke Japan, Meiji period (1868-1912), 19th century
Natural patina ivory carving depicting a lifelike wrapped snake, with engraved scales highlighted by black pigment and obsidian inlaid eyes. This type of netsuke, known as katabori, is characterized by the pleasant roundness of the shapes and by the choice of subjects, which are often linked to the fauna.
Two character mark incised.
