A soapstone seal China, Qing dynasty, 19th century
Quadrangular seal in pale green soapstone surmounted by a carved Qilong with archaic features. Qiulong, literally "twisted dragon" is a decorative motif dear to the Chinese tradition that shows this mythical animal as a wingless dragon. The Qiulong theme was greatly exploited in the Han period for the relief decoration of the splendid jades produced in this period.
