Giuseppe Biasi Da Teulada (1885 - 1945)

Alla fonte.

Primi anni Venti, firmato in basso a sinistra: G. Biasi –Teulada. Provenienza: Collezione privata, Milano. BIASI DA TEULADA GIUSEPPE (1885 - 1945) At the Spring. Oil on canvas Early 1920s, signed on the lower left: G. Biasi -Teulada. Profile by Giuliana Altea attached to the work: Giuseppe Biasi (Sassari 1885-Andorno Micca 1945) was a very popular artist in Milan between the second and third decades of the twentieth century. He first became established as an illustrator of the novels by Grazia Deledda, present at the Venice Biennale in 1909 and 1914, and the exhibitions of Roman Secession in 1913, 1914 and 1915. He enjoyed considerable success with his portrayals of Sardinian folk life filtered through memory and nostalgia, with a languid and sensual tone, sometimes enlivened by expressionistic inflections influenced by proximity to Aroldo Bonzagni, who was a friend of Biasi's. The painting in question depicts a subject repeatedly addressed by the artist with infinite variations over the course of his career: a country scene with a knight giving his horse water and a woman getting ready to wash clothes. In all probability, the work was produced at the end of the period spent in Milan (1915-1923), shortly before the artist left for a four-year stay in North Africa that significantly changed his style and enriched his range of subjects. The oil has the typical characteristics of Biasi's painting in the early 1920s: the rapid and cursive pictorial technique, which outlines the figures and the landscape with synthetic brush strokes; the skilful arrangement of the composition elements, which reveals his experience as an illustrator; the preference for low ranges of colours, lit by passages of yellow and bright green in the background of the town; the clear hand drawing of the contours that dialogues with waving application of the pigment; the ? plat effect of the representation, which transforms the low houses of the village into a theatrical stage and the well and the trough into the props needed for the actions of the extras. The signature accompanied by the word "Teulada" was also a common trait of the painter in the first decades of his activity. The addition of the word "Teulada" to see the artist's signature refers to the aesthetic shock suffered by Biasi at the time of his first visit to the town of Sulcis, around 1910, when he saw the colourful costumes worn by the inhabitants.
