217 FINE CHINESE, ISLAMIC & ASIAN ART
Lot 276
Big embossed gilded copper prabha, adorned with vegetal motifs and portraying eight characters grouped in round phytomorphic spirals. In the center is an oblong niche painted with red pigment, designed to hold the owner of the prabha. The eight characters portrayed might conceivably be the eight Dikpala, guardians of the cardinal points: Kubera, Yama, Indra, Varuna, Isana, Agni, Vayu, Nirriti. If this interpretation is correct, the main character was in all likelihood the bodhisattva Vjrapani in his standing manifestation. Noteworthy is the style of the work, which makes its possible origin the temple of Densatil. In the niche is also visible a carved syllable.
