Bronze sculpture depicting the Buddha Shakyamuni. Burma/Myanmar, 19th cent.
The Buddha Shakyamuni seated in a meditative posture, with his right hand performing a gesture known as bhumisparsha mudra or 'taking the earth as a witness', his left hand in dhyana mudra. One notices the great care in giving the face the expression of serenity and compassion particularly through the use of glass or enamels to create his eyes.
