Mathieu Justin was an artist specializing in bas relief historical and religious subjects and exhibited repeatedly at the Salons between 1846 and 1861, even winning some prizes. Works by him are kept at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and a bas-relief in embossed leather with the same subject is in the collection of the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp (inv. MPM.V.III.03.007).
