Arte Africana
Democratic Republic of Congo, Hemba. Figure of an ancestor. Wood with dark patina. Late 19th century.
A valuable Hemba sculpture with the classic kaposi hairstyle forming a cross on the nape of the neck. Skilfully made, the lower part was covered by a kind of band skirt made of cloth or animal skin, so this part was less cared for by the sculptor.
Provenance: Personal collection of the 'Arte Africana' gallery, Turin.
