Dogon mask. Mali, first half of the 20th century.
Dyommo mask belonged to the Dogon people. These masks were carved for young dancers. the hare ears symbolize the spirit of the animal, and during ceremonies the mask was worn for rituals in favor of hare hunting. The ''Nyama,'' or life force of the mask, was activated a few days before the community dance.
