231 OLD MASTERS & XIX CENTURY ART
Lot 255
At the back there's an english cartouche with probable origin. It presents this text: this beautiful little Study for the celebrated picture of the "Ecce homo", now in the National Gallery, was purchased, at Naples in 1844, by Mr. Woodburn of Signor Corelli, who inherited it from his father-in-law, signor Gonsalvo Coltellino of Florence. Gonsalvo Coltellino was the son of Coltellino, the Poet, who died in the service of Peter the Great, and who was the intimate friend of Metastasio, from whom he was said to have received this gem, which possesses a peculiar softness of expression not equalled in the larger picture.
