Auction 390 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA, OCEANICA E DELLE AMERICHE Online
Lot 80
Hollow figure representing an anthropoform jaguar, male, standing, with large conical tail acting as a support, upper and lower firing holes.
Medium-fine grey-coloured body, traces of evanescent engobe. Oxidising firing in an open kiln.
The figure depicts a mythical jaguar (either its alter ego or a shaman wearing a mask and a jaguar skin) in the act of performing a dance. The mythical jaguar could represent the symbol of virility not controlled by the norms of culture. It seems related to the cult of the Moon.
