Auction 365 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA Traditional
Lot 31
Unfortunately, only this fragment of saddle has survived, which must have been very elaborate and belonged to a noble and important character, but that gives us a vivid testimony of the refinement and aesthetic care that the Tuareg reserved for every artifact and object of use that represented them.
This elaborate small sculpture made in the round on a wooden support covered in fabric and silver chiseled and engraved, was probably inspired by the cross of Agadez, figure common to all twenty-one tribes that make up the people of the Tuareg and that represented for the blue men the four corners of the world. Possessing it meant spiritually owning the whole world and being able to go in all directions "since we don’t know where we will die" in the purest nomadic style.
