Auction 390 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA, OCEANICA E DELLE AMERICHE Online
Lot 17
Within the sphere of Baule sculpture, great importance was given to the wooden statuettes of the Bride and Groom of the Other World, Blolo Bian the male and Blolo the female. These sculptures were carved and given as gifts from the husband to the wife and vice versa and represented the couple coming together as an ideal couple in a parallel life, free of pain and suffering, where the newlyweds, beautiful and young, lived happily in joy and well-being.
Beautiful in terms of volume proportion and carving quality, this male sculpture Blolo Bian in an upright position on a plinth and with hands on his abdomen is characterised by the typical elaborate Baulè hairstyle coordinated with the onion beard.
Glossy black patina encrusted with diffuse traces of kaolin, visible defects and signs of use.
Measures: 24.0 x 6.5 x 5.0 cm
Starting price: € 1.700,00
