Prescribed by the diviners of northern Togo to elevate the power and protection of individuals, families, or entire villages, these highly stylized sculptures made from a single block of wood depict the anthropomorphic figure with few volumes and succinct strokes: rounded head with no hint of a face, ring-shaped neck and pelvis, arms rough-hewn from the torso, and separate legs. No concession to descriptive detail, only synthesis.
