An ivory intaglio depicting the image of a preciously dressed mother with her baby in her arms, seated on a zoomorphic stool, echoing the Christian iconography, widespread in Congo since the 15th century, of the Madonna with child.
Provenance: Parisian collection of the painter Arturo Carmassi (Lucca, 1925- Empoli, 2015). This piece was inherited from the French humanist and collector Renée Druart (Grasse 1888-1961) whose daughter Carmassi had married.
