Nigeria, Yoruba. Eshu figure. Wood with dark patina, cauri and leather. First half of the 20th century.
Rare and important sculpture depicting Eshu dressed in cauri depicting him as 'lord of trade' as cauri are a symbol of wealth and considered coins until recently. It occupies a fundamental place in Yoruba cosmology.
