Auction 365 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA Traditional
Lot 119
In ancient times the task of weaving the cloth was entrusted to men, while women had the task of embroidering.
The embroiderers did not prepare the design in advance, but they began with a guideline and then continued randomly thus creating these ingenious fabrics with patterns of geometric interweaving never equal, difficult to remember for the human eye and mind and therefore will never bore the observer.
The embroideries were cut about 2 millimeters from the fabric and gave the feel typical of velvet. This is why they were called velvets of Kasai, a region of origin in the central Congo.
