A important woodblock print depicting a famous passage from the ninth chapter of "The Tales of Ise", a masterpiece of the Japanese literature.
Here, Narihira, tired of her wordly life in the capital, leaves home with two close friends in search of a peaceful existence in the Eastern provinces.
This print is the central part of a triptych which the whole can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Accession Number: JP1789).
