Auction 365 | AFRICA, OCEANIA & AMERICA - ARTE AFRICANA Traditional
Lot 86
The Ogboni Society is one of the most important institutions of the Yoruba that decides the most complex legal disputes and issues sentences and punishments for criminals up to the death penalty. It also controls the lawfulness of new rules and their decay, thus having an important role in every crucial area of political, juridical and religious life.
The male female pair usually in bronze, symbol of justice, is always paired and joined by a chain (in this specimen there was a small hole in the front of the hat, now covered by encrustations), represents the mythical first ancestral wise couple and is called Edan.
This ancient bronze sculpture, represented kneeling and with joined hands, was probably part of an Edan and exhibits a valid green patina that only time has been able to create.
