The painting, whose dimensions suggest that it could have been an exhibition work, is part of the series dedicated by Vincenzo Caprile to the picturesque character of the old Sossio, portrayed in his poor fisherman's clothes in many variations and different poses within the space scenic of the cellar. The specific compositional cut of the present painting has been re-proposed several times by Caprile also in the form of portraits of Sossio with the pitcher in his hand (see G. Caprile, "Vincenzo Caprile", Cava dei Tirreni 1988, p. 142, tav. 23 a, 23 b).
