Auction 347 Modern & Contemporary Art
Lot 30
Initials "WC" and year "56" lower left.
The artwork can be placed in the series of Congdon's paintings that have the Amalfi coast as their subject, in particular "Positano" executed in late spring this year, such as Positano 6 from the Kettle's Yard collection in Cambridge (UK), and number 7 in the Congdon Foundation collection. This painting differs from the previous ones above all in that it offers us a daytime view (perhaps a sunrise) in which a strong contrast is created between the brown mass of the promontories and the white-pink of the sea and sky. The support and treatment of the material, the presence of gold dust, as well as the architectures engraved in the lower left section, correspond to the style of the artist in recent years. William Congdon Foundation, Milan, authenticity certificate on photo.
