Louise Abbéma was born in Étampes in 1857.
She is undoubtedly one of the most representative artists of the Belle Époque.
He began painting while still a teenager, and studied with famous artists of the time such as Charles Joshua Chaplin, Jean-Jacques Henner and Carolus-Duran. Thanks to his talent, he gained public recognition at just 23 years old.
Louise Abbéma continued her career creating numerous portraits of other well-known personalities of the period, also creating panels and murals for the Paris City Hall, the Paris Opera House, several theaters, including the "Sarah Bernhardt Theater", and the " Colonial Governor's Palace" in Dakar, Senegal.
Abbéma was among the women artists whose works were exhibited in the Women's Building during the 1893 Chicago World's Fair.
Specializing in oil portraits and watercolors, she did not hide the strong influence of Chinese and Japanese painters, as well as contemporary artists such as Édouard Manet.
