Manlio Alfieri Biography

(Tarquinia, 23 May 1909 – Gaeta 1991) He was followed in his training by a great local designer, Pietro Ghignoni, and concentrated on the study of ancient art while always following contemporary art carefully. After the very first beginnings represented by portraits of local characters he began to paint the most disparate subjects: objects, flowers with a particular study, portraits of his family members. The prevailing subjects consistently remain landscapes and still lifes, such as Rose in the Silver Vase (1974) or Landscape of Gaeta (1975). Although he settled in Gaeta, where he ended his days, Tarquinia always remained as a nostalgic mirage in his memory. In 1935 he received the Tarquinia Prize and was present at the VII Roman Quadrennial, but there were numerous personal and collective exhibitions both in Italy and abroad: just to mention the latest, he exhibited in 1973 at the Le Muse Gallery in Bari and at the Russo Gallery in Rome, in 1974 at the Galleria Accademia in Turin, in 1978 at the Galleria La Barcaccia in Fiuggi-Fonte, between Dec. 1974 and Jan. 1975 and in July 1979 at the Galleria La Barcaccia in Rome, both times with a catalog presentation by Franco Miele.
