Manuel Jimenez Aranda Biography

José Jiménez Aranda (Seville 1837 – 1903) was a Spanish painter.
Coming from a family of painters, he began studying painting with Manuel Cabral and Eduardo Cano de la Peña. In 1851 he entered the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría in Seville. In 1867 he moved to Jerez to work as a restorer and designer of stained glass.
He lived and worked in Rome and Paris before returning to Seville in 1892. Among his disciples in Seville were Daniel Vázquez Díaz, Eugenio Hermoso, Ricardo Lopez Cabrera and Manuel Gonzalez Santos Sanz Arizmendi. In the last decade of the 19th century he frequented the landscape circle of Alcala de Guadaira, leaving in that area some examples of "grand master en pintura", as Sorolla defined him. Among his most famous works are "Una desgracia", "Un lance en la plaza de toros" and "Una esclava en venta". José Jiménez Aranda was also a notable designer and illustrator. José Jiménez Aranda received several honors including honorable mention in the Nacionales de Bellas Artes in 1864 and 1866. In 1890 he won the first medal of the Exposición Nacional de Bellas Artes for his work "Una desgracia". In 1883 he won the gold medal at the Munich International Exhibition. José Jiménez Aranda was also named Commander of the Order of Isabel la Católica
