Aniello Ascione Biography

Aniello Ascione (1680-1708) was an Italian still life painter.
He is considered an important representative of the Flemish style and a follower of the painter Abraham Brueghel, who worked in Naples in the last quarter of the 17th century.
A pupil of the Neapolitan painter Giovan Battista Ruoppolo, he specialized in painting still lifes such as fruit and flower baskets, preferring bunches of grapes as a subject.
Initially Ascione painted in the style of his master Ruoppolo, characterized by flashy baroque effects. In his more mature period his painting was influenced by Abraham Brueghel: still lifes of fruit and flowers positioned in a dim landscape. Some of his works reach a high level thanks to the warm color tone and the successful decorative effect.
Ascione was also able to integrate still lifes with figures into compositions created in collaboration with painters specializing in figures. An example is the cartouche of flowers with the Adoration of the Magi created in collaboration with Nicola Vaccaro.
