Francesco Aviani, born in Venice on 25 November 1662, was an Italian painter from the Republic of Venice.
His activity took place almost exclusively in Vicenza and its surroundings, above all as a fresco and perspective landscape painter.
In his oil works, we find a nostalgic representation of the Venetian landscapes, accompanied by views of ruins.
It is curious to note how in these views, instead of depicting the usual Arcadian scenes, with characters that determine a perception of the dimensions of the ruins, Aviani sometimes wanted to insert some evangelical scenes, as in the example of the two canvases preserved in the Vicenza museums: the " Landscape with Lazarus”, “Ricco Epulone”, and “Christ among the Doctors”.
Aviani's works are part of the Venetian landscape of the 18th century. The way of treating the architecture, and their scenographic grandeur, have Emilian influences which indicate the artist's stay in Emilia, where he would have had contact with the Bibiena environment.
