Massimo Bartolini Biography
Massimo Bartolini was born in 1962 in Cecina, Italy. He attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, where he trained. In 1993 he held his first solo exhibition, and from the beginning he has used different media to express his art. His attention is focused on the design of elements that recall our perceptive systems and are able to transform space. His work is the result of an investigation into the relationship between man, nature and architectural space. The environments that Bartolini reinvents or even creates are never structured as static places, but rather as a progressive multisensorial dimension. Massimo Bartolini's first mature work is «Hagoromo» from 1989, which gives its title to the Pecci exhibition. The fulcrum of the itinerary is the largest sound installation ever created by the artist, conceived in collaboration with the English musician Gavin Bryars. In the work, considered the largest sound installation created by the artist, themes and characteristics of all his research are anticipated. In 2000, Bartolini dedicated himself to the restoration of the Anselmetti Chapel in Turin. He has exhibited his works in solo exhibitions internationally at GAM – Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea, Turin, in 2005; Luigi Pecci Center for Contemporary Art, Prato, in 2003; Museu Serralves – Museu de Arte Contemporanea, Porto, in 2007. Among the numerous international events in which he participated, we remember Manifesta 4 (Frankfurt, 2002), at the 2nd Santa Fe Biennial (1997), at the Venice Biennale in 2005 and in 1999, in 2011 at the Yokohama Triennial and the following year at dOCUMENTA 13, Kassel.
