Giorgio Berlini Biography
Giorgio Berlini was born in Milan in 1931. During his adolescence, he attended secondary schools at Gonzaga, and then enrolled at the Carlo Cattaneo Institute for Surveyors in Milan. Thanks to his exceptional artistic gifts, he spent some years at the Brera Academy under the guidance of the masters Francesco Messina and Marino Marini. He began his career working glass at the renowned glassworks of Empoli, also in Milan. After a year of employment as an employee, in 1949 he decided to undertake the business independently, founding his own company. To obtain this autonomy, he must receive authorization from the Court of Milan, as he is still a minor.
Initially, Berlini's activity focused on cutting and engraving glasses, a form of processing that essentially aimed at product quality. After a few years, however, Berlini decided to make a change to his work as an engraver, dedicating himself instead to the "second processing of sheet crystal". From that moment, his company specialized in the production of crystals for chandeliers, home furnishings and bathrooms, and partly in industrial glass, such as flat and curved glass. The number of employees grows to around twenty.
Despite the expansion of the company, Berlini has always maintained a high level of workmanship, managing to form a team of extremely competent collaborators. Under his leadership, revolutionary innovations were even introduced in the field of actual grinding. The result of 25 years of commitment and study on glass has allowed Berlini to create true works of art, authentic sculptures made from blocks of glass and crystal.
The first successes were not long in coming: from his first exhibition in 1974 at the Galleria Nuovo Sagittario in Milan, Berlini enjoyed great success. Many of his works are today held in museums or private collections in several countries, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, France, Brazil and Switzerland. In 1973, Berlini was appointed Knight of Merit of the Republic and in 1993 he received a Certificate of Merit from the municipality of Milan on the occasion of the traditional feast of S. Ambrogio.
