Giuseppe Bertini Biography

Giuseppe Bertini (1825 - 1898) was an Italian artist famous for the creation of stained glass windows.
He studied at the Brera Academy with L. Sabatelli and G. Bisi.
Very active and highly esteemed as a painter, a man of culture and taste, he held delicate artistic roles. His main activity was the creation of artistic stained glass windows carried out within the "Fratelli Bertini" company.
The company, between 1849 and 1850 and subsequently, created all the windows of the Como cathedral; between 1852 and 1859 the large windows of S. Carlo, of S. Ambrogio and the one with the Archangel Michael for the façade of the Milan cathedral and many others.
Abroad he created stained glass windows for the Glasgow Cathedral and for the South Kensington Museum (Victoria and Albert) in London, for the Lima cemetery and for the Rio de Janeiro cathedral.
Bertini also dedicated himself to fresco and oil painting of historical and religious subjects and portraits, among which we remember the vast production of portraits of members of the royal family.
In 1860 he was assigned the chair of painting at Brera, which he held with great authority and prestige until his death. Among his most illustrious students were Moses Bianchi, Carcano, Tallone and Pelizza da Volpedo.
