Renato Birolli (Verona, 1905 - Milan, 1959). He studied at the Verona Academy and moved to Milan, participating in an avant-garde group together with Guttuso, Manzù, Sassu and other well-known artists. Around the 1930s he created a completely personal style that he defined as figurative fiction: a series of works of great intensity and expressive force. In 1937 he participated in the creation of the Corrente movement, which proposed itself as a stance towards the masters of the twentieth century. After the war he moved to Paris and his artistic production was radically influenced by Matisse and Picasso. He begins to be attracted by post-cubist experiences and abstract figurativeness. In the 1950s he tried his hand at American Action Painting, without however dedicating a phase of his life to it.
