Benigno Bossi Biography

Benigno Bossi (Arcisate 1727 - Parma 1792) was a multifaceted Italian artist, specialized in painting, stucco and engraving.
Son of Pietro Luigi Bossi, a famous plasterer active in Saxony, Benigno followed his father to Germany where he learned the art of stucco and collaborated with him. During this period, he became particularly passionate about engraving, especially etching and aquatint.
After the end of the Seven Years' War, Bossi returned to Italy and, after a short stay in Milan, settled in Parma in 1759. Here he began his successful collaboration with the French architect Ennemond Alexandre Petitot, who in 1753 was called to the French court of Parma.
As a painter of neoclassical taste, Bossi painted works for churches in Parma and Colorno, but his activity as an engraver was the one for which he was most appreciated. His subjects were drawn mainly from Parmigianino, but also from Correggio, Guercino and Londonio, and he engraved many creative plates in which his free and lively line made his personality manifest.
