Dieric Bouts was probably born in 1415 in Haarlem, nothing certain is known about the place of birth and the year. He spent his entire life in Leuven, where he worked as a painter, becoming one of the main masters today known as Flemish Primitives. One of the masterpieces is the Last Supper triptych preserved in the Collegiate Church of San Pietro in Leuven.
In 1468 he became the city's official painter, in those years he painted the two large paintings for the court, today preserved in Brussels.
A follower of Rogier Van Der Weyden, Bouts expressed his innovations in religious painting, in altarpieces as well as in small paintings for private devotion, but his landscapes and portraits are also famous. His style is characterized by long and stylized figures, thoughtful expressions, sumptuous fabrics described in detail, full colors used in a skilful way peek out from the painted scenes. But the most appreciated quality is the new way of rendering spaces and volumes, which still inspires Dutch painting today.
