Andre' Bucher Biography
André Bucher was originally from Kerns and born on March 7, 1924 in Mozambique.
From a young age he had the opportunity to meet well-known artists such as Macke, Giacometti or Marino Marini. He studied Fine Arts in various cities such as Zurich, Paris, London, Berlin, Rome and in the United States. Since 1967 he has dedicated himself to sculpture, using lava as a fundamental material since 1976.
André Bucher attended Ossip Zadkine's atelier who introduced him to the world of sculpture. After a brief experience in the fashion field in Paris, he decided to dedicate himself totally to art. He has traveled a long artistic journey exploring style, graphics and interior design until he found his way into the fields of painting and sculpture. Throughout his career, he continued to practice both arts in parallel.
He lived and worked in Geneva since 1949 and his works are now exhibited in museums, foundations or private collections in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Belgium and Holland. Bucher was most likely the first and only artist in the world to integrate lava into the processing of his works. The shapes he created in the material were carefully prepared in his studio in Geneva and sculpted before the lava cooled. Subsequently, he completed the sculpture by adding bronze or acrylic. Director Milo Steiger documented this work of the famous artist with two exceptional films: "La sandale d'Empedocles" in 1976, with the participation of Christian Barth, and "Flirt with Fire" in 1980, both broadcast on numerous television channels throughout the world.
He died in Geneva in 2007.
