Daniel Buren Biography

Daniel Buren (Boulogne-Billancourt, 25 March 1938) is a French painter and sculptor. Trained at the Ecole des Métiers d'Art, he based all of his youthful production on 8.7 cm striped curtain fabric, alternately white and coloured. More recently, in the 1980s he abandoned painting in favor of permanent architectural installations on public spaces, including Les Deux Plateaux at the Palais-Royal in Paris. Almost all of his works do not exist outside the time and space for which they were conceived: most of them were therefore destroyed after their presentation. In 1986 he participated in the Venice Biennale, winning the Golden Lion for the best pavilion. In Italy, in Colle Val d'Elsa, as part of the redevelopment of the center of the lower city (project coordinated by Jean Nouvel's Atelier), he was responsible for the repaving of the central Piazza Arnolfo di Cambio. In 2004 he created the mosaic decoration of the ceiling of the large entrance hall of the Fabre Museum in Montpellier. In 2005 he created Partitions colorées in the New Hemodialysis Pavilion in Pistoia, at the invitation of Giuliano Gori. In 1999 he participated in the Artist's Lights project in Turin with the Tappeto Volante installation in Piazza Palazzo di Città. On 4 February 2010, the Competition Commission for the architectural and artistic redevelopment of Piazza Verdi in La Spezia awarded the redevelopment of the square to Buren. The square was inaugurated on 30 December 2016. In 2011 he created "Three-coloured fountain walls for a hexagon" in the park of Villa la Magia, in Quarrata.
