Lodovico Cardi known as Cigoli (Cigoli di San Miniato, 21 September 1559 – Rome, 8 June 1613) was an Italian painter, architect and sculptor. He was active between the Mannerist and Baroque periods. Trained in Florence, under the guidance of Alessandro Allori and Bernardo Buontalenti, he worked in Florence and in the last years of his life in Rome, during the pontificate of Pope Paul V Borghese. He was a fellow student and great friend of Galileo Galilei. During his artistic life he dealt with painting, plastic arts, pictorial anatomy, scenography, literature and music. He had the merit of having brought mannerism to Florence and of being welcomed among the first at the Accademia della Crusca. In the last years of his life he was made a Knight of Malta.
