Giuseppe Carli Biography

Giuseppe Carli was a famous Venetian remer born in 1915. His father, Giovanni Carli, was among the first to carry out this activity in Bastian Pagnacco's workshop. Upon Giovanni's death, his eldest son Vittorio (1903-1950) took his place in running the family shop, which he subsequently opened himself. When Vittorio died, his younger brother Giuseppe had to choose whether to continue or close the family business. He decided to continue and used his great artistic gift to create harmonious and technically perfect fórcole, soon becoming the favorite remèr of great racers and gondoliers.
In the 1950s, Giuseppe had an innovative idea: transforming the forcole from functional objects into art objects, creating real sculptures. Some art critics discovered his works and organized exhibitions in Italy and the United States. This new commercial outlet allowed him to face the economic crisis of the 1960s and to refine his artistic sensitivity, without abandoning the construction principles learned from his brother.
When Vogalonga was founded in 1975, the growing demand for his works pushed him to take on two apprentices: Saverio Pàstor in 1975 and Vittorio Marcoleoni in 1977. In 1983, Giuseppe began teaching the trade to Paolo Brandolisio, who would inherit his shop. Giuseppe died after a long illness in October 1999, leaving a legacy as one of the greatest remèrs in the history of Venice.
