Giovanni Francesco Caroto Biography
Giovan Francesco Caroto was born in Verona in around 1480. He was an eclectic painter who studied under the guidance of Liberale da Verona, later working at the Gonzaga court in Mantua, in the service of Antonio Maria Visconti in Milan and finally at the court of the Marquis of Monferrato. During his travels he greatly appreciated Flemish and Nordic painting and decided to embrace the most current artistic currents, such as those of Mantegna, Raphael, Bernardino Luini and Bramantino.
He devoted himself to many forms of art, including painting, miniature, naturalistic drawing, medallions and statuary. One of his major interests was religious painting, both public and private, but he also achieved high results in portraits and landscape painting.
Caroto stood out for his linear fluidity, the softness of the color and the brightness of the depictions. After returning to Verona, he produced many works that have adorned the city's altars and Italian and European galleries, sought after and held in great esteem everywhere.
He died in Verona in 1555.
