Vittore Carpaccio Biography

Vittore Carpaccio, born in Venice in 1465, was one of the greatest painters in the production of canvases in Venice between the 15th and 16th centuries. Many scholars believe that he began his artistic experience in Venice, influenced by Gentile Bellini and Lazzaro Bastiani. It is almost certain that Carpaccio also had contact with Antonello da Messina and that he saw or studied the works of Piero della Francesca. In 1501 he began a cycle of canvases for the Palazzo Ducale, intended to decorate the Sala dei Pregadi and that of the Maggior Consiglio, but which are now completely lost. Many Venetian schools offered him prestigious positions. These canvases are often large narrative compositions depicting legends of saints, in which the painter illustrates, with richness of color and finesse of detail, the Venetian life of the time.
Despite the numerous public works on which he had worked, Carpaccio also committed himself to the creation of non-religious works for private individuals, such as the "Courtesans" and the "Portrait of a Knight".
In Koper he executed the altarpiece and the organ doors for the Cathedral, but he died here in 1525.
