G. Casale Biography
Giuseppe Casale was born on 3 January 1927 in Pianopoli, a municipality in the province of Catanzaro where he spent his entire life. He discovered his passion for wood carving only at a mature age, a few years after his retirement. Surprisingly, Casale discovered that he had an innate talent for creating expressive and moving artistic figures using wood as a raw material. Throughout his artistic career, Casale has always been in search of originality and created unique and heartfelt works. His art was influenced by his religious faith, and many of his works were sacred in nature. Casale was a very versatile sculptor, capable of expressing different feelings and themes through his works. Many of them focused on the suffering and difficulties of the Calabrian people.
Among his most famous works are "Christ on the Cross", the "Amazon", the "Rape of the Sabine Women", "St. George on Horseback", "The Alpine" and "Sylvester". His sculptures have aroused the admiration and consensus of the public in numerous exhibitions, such as those at the Prefecture of Catanzaro, the Province of Vibo Valentia, the Crafts Exhibition of Turin and many other regional and international events.
Two of his most important works are the "Welcoming Christ", a reinforced concrete statue over 6 meters high and weighing around 200 quintals donated to the convent of the Passionist friars of Fuscaldo, and another work which embellishes the waiting room of the airport of Lamezia Terme.
Casale was a humble artist who always preferred to put the message of his works in the foreground rather than his own person. He left behind an artistic legacy of great value that will continue to inspire and move people for generations to come. The artist passed away in 2005.
