Sandro Cherchi Biography

Sandro Cherchi was born in Genoa in 1911 and attended the Accademia Ligustica after completing classical studies. In 1935 he moved to Milan and there he met artists such as Sassu, Birolli, Manzù and Treccani with whom he formed the "Corrente" artistic movement from 1938 to 1943. The group aimed to deal with modern European culture, to promote expressive freedom and to repudiate the cultural isolation imposed by the fascist regime. His interest in art was based on the post-impressionism of Ensor, Van Gogh and the German Expressionists.
In 1946 Cherchi became a professor at the Academy of Genoa and in 1948 he acquired the chair of sculpture at the Accademia Albertina in Turin. In 1950 he participated in the Venice Biennale and was invited again in 1951. Subsequently he also participated in the Biennials of Sao Paulo, Brazil and Alexandria, Egypt. In 1951 he went to live in Turin.
At the end of the 1950s Cherchi began his engraving activity, preferring the use of etching, aquatint and lithography techniques. His engravings were characterized by the tendency to break down the figure into luminous planes and by placing the image in a multiple space-time dimension which alluded to the virtuality of the form in movement. The dialectic between the figure and what is around it is always present in his works, a vehicle of emotional and existential tension.
In 1958 Cherchi won a purchase prize at the sixth edition of the Spoleto Prize. Many of his works were created to be placed in public places and his interest in art has always been based on the relationship between man and landscape. Cherchi has maintained a consistent line of development throughout his artistic career. In 1987 an important anthological exhibition was dedicated to him in Turin.
