John Christoforou Biography
John Christoforou was born on March 10, 1921 in England.
He belongs to the current of abstract surrealism. In fact, the artist is inspired by psychic improvisation to create his own figurative universe.
Christoforou spent his childhood in Greece, but returned to England in 1938. With the outbreak of the Second World War he joined the Royal Air Force, and was sent on a mission to the Far East.
Christoforou held his first exhibition in 1949. In 1957 he moved to Paris and participated in a group show with Enrico Baj, Jorn and Mihailovitch at the Galerie Rive Gauche.
His works are exhibited in major international museums and collections, such as the Tate Gallery, London, the Frissiras Museum, Greece, the Museum of Fine Arts in Toulouse, the Museum of 20th Century Art in Vienna and the Fonds National d'Art Contemporain of Paris.
Galerie Birch in Copenhagen, with which Christoforou worked for many years, will pay tribute to him with a solo exhibition, "Hommage à Christoforou", on 3 May 2014, the year of his death.
