Giuseppe Conte Biography
Giuseppe Conte was born on 21 January 1899 in Maglie, in the province of Lecce. From an early age he frequented his father Pietro's workshop, acquiring the first notions of the trade. Subsequently, he enrolled at the Maglie art school and, later, went to Rome to continue his studies at the Artistic Museum directed by the master Galileo Parisi.
In Rome, he studied sculpture under the guidance of two important masters, Carafa and Celani, who contributed to the maturation of his skill and artistic sensitivity. Upon returning to Maglie, he began teaching at the art institute, where he trained many students who went on to have brilliant careers.
However, with the advent of fascism, Giuseppe Conte decided not to take the membership card and to protest against the regime, thus losing his teaching position. He then opened his workshop in Via Orfanotrofio, where he dedicated himself completely to sculpture.
His works, of great value, have obtained commissions from many parts of Italy and his fame quickly grew nationwide. His production of sculptures is characterized by the precision of the details and the care of the finishing, with an eye always attentive to the proportions and beauty of the subjects represented. Finally, Giuseppe Conte was considered one of the greatest sculptors of the 20th century and left an indelible mark on the history of Italian art.
