Carlo Cresti Biography
Carlo Cresti, born in Florence on 4 November 1931 and died in the same city on 29 October 2018, was an Italian architect and architectural historian.
After obtaining his diploma from the artistic high school, Cresti enrolled in the architecture faculty of the University of Florence, graduating in 1962. During this period, he also dedicated himself to the figurative arts, obtaining numerous awards. However, he decided to focus mainly on architecture, university teaching and the history of architecture.
Active in the field of architectural design, furniture and objects, among his most significant creations we can mention a residential building in via Lanza, in Florence (1966), the furnishing of the church of San Martino in Campi Bisenzio (1968) and the Michelangelo Buonarroti room at the Bargello National Museum (1970).
Cresti was a prolific author and served as director of the magazine "La Nuova Città", founded by Giovanni Michelucci. Furthermore, he dedicated himself to monographic studies on Le Corbusier and Alvar Aalto, as well as writing volumes such as "Architects and engineers of nineteenth-century Tuscany" (1978), "Architecture and fascism" (1986), "Art nouveau in Florence" (1982 ), "Orientalisms in Western architecture" (1999) and "Museology and museography. Theory and practice" (2006). Cresti distinguished himself as an authoritative protagonist in the study of the history of Florentine architecture between the two wars.
