Leandro Da Ponte Biography
Leandro da Ponte, known as Bassano, was born on 10 June 1557 in Bassano del Grappa and died on 15 April 1622 in Venice. Second son of the famous artist Jacopo Bassano, he worked alongside his father Jacopo Bassano and his older brother Francesco. According to family tradition, he created many religious works, also becoming a renowned portrait painter.
Starting from 1575, he actively collaborated with his father but with his death and the suicide of his brother Francesco, he opened his studio in Venice. Here he acquired the fame of a successful portraitist, adopting a style similar to that of the Venetian master Tintoretto.
Leandro developed his own style, influenced by the artistic environment of Venice, and perfected his drawing. He characterized his works with the use of warm, light colors, applied evenly in well-defined areas, unlike his father, who painted with dense, robust strokes.
Many of his works are not precisely dated and have often been confused with those of other artists. In addition to numerous portraits and religious works, he also created genre works.
Leandro died on 15 April 1622 in Venice.
