Alessandro D'anna Biography

Alessandro D'Anna (1743 - 1810) was an Italian painter and decorator, son of the more famous artist Vito D'Anna.
Follower of his father and brother Olivio, he acquired a similar pictorial style.
He began to paint in tempera, creating "bambocciate and vedutine", but was above all known for his engravings of views of Vesuvius and Etna.
In Palermo he painted frescoes in the chapel of S. Francesco di Paola and in the monastery of S. Caterina. In 1769 he created an oil painting representing the Virgin, Saint Anna and Saint Louis, today preserved in the Diocesan Museum of Palermo. He subsequently moved to Acireale, where he frescoed the chapel of Jesus and Mary in the church of S. Sebastiano and that of Santo Amore in the church of San Pietro. He also painted “The Addolorata” and the “Transfiguration on Calvary”.
He later moved to Naples with his brother Olivio and here he married the painter Margherita. Together with his brother he was commissioned by King Ferdinand IV to portray the costumes of the inhabitants of various regions of the peninsula and in 1786 he created the drawings of the province of Naples for the Royal Factory of Capodimonte. These were subsequently engraved in Rome in 1791 and in Naples.
