Gianni Dessì was born in Rome in 1955. There were numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad between the 1980s and 1990s which aroused and increased the interest of critics in Gianni Dessì's work, among which the participations at the Venice Biennale in 1984, 1986 and 1993. An education also linked to avant-garde theater and the use of combining different expressive languages have given his work a completely original character. From the beginning his paintings do not appear forced within the confines of the canvas, but expand beyond, onto the walls that welcome them as if to underline the intent to expand towards an "other" space, beyond the canonical limits. Emblematic in this sense are the imposing mural interventions created in 1994 for the headquarters of the Italian Cultural Institute in Paris and in 1996 for one of the walls of the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome on the occasion of the XII Quadrennial National Art Exhibition. Archaic and primordial images emerge from the material mixtures. These are ellipses, rhombuses, symbols of infinity, eyes and spirals, cracks and hemispheres that populate an esoteric and alienating panorama. The metal elements, sometimes knotted in the center and sometimes applied in the form of large plates, as well as the volumes that sometimes protrude from the canvases, come into tension with the frontality of the work, forcing the viewer to continuously move to understand the extreme complexity of the shapes he observes . From the winter of 2001-2002 is Gianni Dessì, legend, the first solo exhibition at the Galleria dello Scudo. The large exhibition held at the MACRO in Rome between February and March 2006 documents the further evolution of his language, open to the use of new materials such as glass resin, centered on the creation of singular perspective games in settings modified for this purpose (camerae pictae), and started in recent years towards plastic research which, contrary to his pictorial commitment, is linked to figuration.
